The mission of SHS is to provide healthcare for persons who are homeless in Mecklenburg County. Currently, we operate at a single site in partnership with the Salvation Army Center of Hope on Spratt Street, providing free healthcare to homeless women and children.

Under the name of The Nursing Center for Health Promotion we were originally founded in 1989 by nursing faculty from UNC Charlotte and operated under the aegis of the university for 16 years. Support has been provided from our inception from a variety of different foundation grants and charitable giving.

In 2005, the clinic became an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation under the name of Shelter Health Services, Inc. Our Board of Directors is comprised of nurses, physicians, and community leaders who give generously of their time and resources to make our services possible.
